What Malcom Perry brings to the Saints

With the Saints offense continuing to struggle, the signed former Patriots and Dolphins wide receiver Malcolm Perry, who was recently waived off of injured reserve after having a foot injury dating back to September.

The 5’10, 190 pound receiver was a seventh round pick in the 2020 draft. He’s appeared in nine games in his NFL career, all of them for the Dolphins. In those nine games he totaled 9 receptions on 13 targets for 92 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 3 carries for 5 yards.

Coming out of college, Perry was the quarterback for Navy from 2016-2019. He was primarily the option quarterback and rushed for 4,286 yards and 39 touchdowns. To go along with that he caught 22 passes for 470 yards, he also threw 1,084 yards and 7 touchdowns. Once entering the NFL he made the transition to wide receiver for a better shot to make a NFL roster.

The Dolphins used him as a short gain guy to beat zone and get some yards after the catch primarily from the slot. They also used him in the run game as a wildcat quarterback option.

So what does he bring to the Saints and how will they use him?

On film Perry was used to in the short game, lots of bubble screens, screens, drags, a short hitch. All these route combinations were designed for him to get open fast and to get yards after the catch. This is something the Saints have struggled with, getting a receiver in space on early downs. Possibly we see Perry get some early down short passes and run for some yards.

Perry was signed to the practice squad for the moment, and the Saints plan to have a quick promotion for him so he plays this Thursday vs the Bills.

With both Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram’s game status in question, Perry could also be used in the backfield as a running back.
