Looking into Taysom Hill’s Extension

Taysom Hill and the Saints came to a mutual agreement on a 4 year extension that’s worth $40M. The Saints currently are around $50ish million over the salary cap, and with this extension that number is lowered.

Taysom Hill was due a $8.9M cap hit in 2022 (this offseason) and this extension lowers that number. Now the Saints can lower that cap number and spread it across the four years of this contract extension.

This past offseason there was a “extension” that earned Hill up to $140M but with void years, which is why this extension is being done now, because the deal over the last offseason was just a way to save cap space, that money and extension wasn’t actually a deal. His contract was simply just restructured to free up $7.5M in cap space.

His base contract for $40M is his base salary for his current role as a flex and gadget player. If Hill becomes a full time starting quarterback and stays a full time starting quarterback, then Hill earns his money incentives which will land his salary somewhere between $40M and $95M.

This contract extension does have some importance for the Saints future. As Hill was set to be a free agent this offseason along with Jameis Winston and Trevor Siemian, so if this deal didn’t get done then the only quarterback on the roster this offseason would be Ian Book. Now there is some reassurance at the quarterback position, and if another quarterback comes over to New Orleans then Hill can stay at his flex role.
