Trevor Siemian to start for now; how the Saints can pursue OBJ and more Saints news

Sean Payton announced and confirmed that Trevor Siemian will be the starter for Sunday’s game vs the Falcons. Payton said “His preparation this week has been really good” and it sounds like Sean Payton knew who the starter was even before the week started.

Siemian said that he found out Wednesday that he would be the starter for this week’s game. Based on the timing of Taysom Hill’s concussion protocol it appears that played a role in the decision. While Siemian starts this week we could potentially see Hill starting next week in Tennessee.

As for Siemian though, the players and the coaches have faith in him.

Deonte Harris had this to say about him, “Trevor’s my guy, we got nothing but faith and trust in him”, also mentioned that the reason he is starting is unfortunate, but that the team will always find a way. Harris also mentioned that Siemian arm is stronger than Drew Brees’ arm from the time he played with him (2019-2020) but not as strong as Winston’s, so there’s a middle ground balance.

Payton mentioned that rookie quarterback Ian Book will most likely be active for the first time this season and will be the gameday backup in the case of an injury.

Final injury report

Ty Montgomery (hamstring), Carl Granderson (shoulder) are out for Sunday’s game. The Saints special teams loses a critical piece in Ty Montgomery who is on pace to be an all pro special teams player. Carl Granderson as well is a critical loss to the defensive line depth and the special teams unit.

Malcom Jenkins (knee), Payton Turner (calf) are questionable. Jenkins hasn’t missed a game for any reason since 2013, he’s also a big pet of the elite defense the Saints have been known for. Payton Turner is a piece that would be nice to have and finally see him and Davenport on the field together, the defensive line has yet to play a full game together.

Dwayne Washington (neck), Taysom Hill (concussion), and Terron Armstead (groin) are all set to go.

Expect Jameis Winston to be placed on injured reserve either today or tomorrow.

Odell is on schedule to be released/waived on Monday and Tuesday we will know if anyone got him off waivers. His contract got restructured a little bit but he still has a $7.25M cap hit for anyone claiming him off waivers. For more information on how the Saints can land Odell click here to find out.
