Saints Rumored to have called about Russell Wilson

There is still uncertainty about who the next franchise quarterback will be for the Saints after the retirement of Drew Brees back in March. It could be someone playing college football right now, it could be someone on their roster or it could be someone on another team.

The Saints team right now and for the next few seasons presumably will be too good to not have a good to great quarterback and not make a Super Bowl run. The defense is at a championship level of play, and the offense is just two to three missing pieces away from having an elite offense. And with Jameis Winston out that possibly puts his future with the Saints in jeopardy due to the potential aggressiveness the Saints will have this offseason at the quarterback position.

Personally I would like Winston back and he fits the team well, but it’s hard to judge whether or not you bring him back when you’re looking for the next franchise guy and other options become available.

Guys like Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodger, both had problems with their current teams over the last offseason, who could become available given the right offer.

Wilson at one point mentioned that if he was to be traded the Saints, Bears, Raiders, and the Dolphins were four teams he would want to go to. It was reported by Jordan Shultz today that the Saints had called about Russell Wilson and his availability, when he would be available and how much the asking price would be. The Seahawks for now have given a firm no to the teams that have called about Wilson. This could be something that the Saints pull the trigger on in the offseason if they feel it’s the best move for them and the team.

Another name that hasn’t been brought up a lot as a contender in terms of going to the Saints, but he’s a possible trade target in the offseason is Aaron Rodgers. If the Saints are in question about their next franchise quarterback, which they are, and Rodgers becomes available via trade the Saints will definitely shoot their shot, get aggressive, and pull the trigger on an offer.

Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, and Trevor Siemian are all set to be free agents after the season, leaving Ian Book the only quarterback on the Saints until they re-sign/sign someone.
