How the Saints can get OBJ if things play out right

Odell Beckham Jr. appears to be on the verge of being waived by the Browns. After a crazy day yesterday filled with trade rumors that the Saints were in talks with the Browns about a possible trade for Odell but couldn’t agree on a deal.

Odell’s dad yesterday posted a video of throws that Baker Mayfield missed and didn’t make towards Odell. He’s also been dealing with a shoulder injury and there has to be some frustration between the Browns and Odell.

Today the Browns excused Odell from practice although he was ready to fully practice. Then Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski informed the team that Odell wasn’t a part of the team at the moment; then he told the team that Odell wouldn’t be with the team for the remainder of the season moving forward. Now it appears Odell is trying to negotiate his release/waive.

With the trade deadline over, if Odell is released, he goes to waivers and in order for the Saings to get Odell is to put in a waiver claim and hope that any team in front of them doesn’t put in a claim as well.

If the Saints somehow managed to get Odell off of waivers they would have to pay the remaining $7.25 million in guaranteed salary that he’s owed this season. According to overthecap.com the Saints currently have $998,752 in salary cap and according to NFLPA the Saints have $710K. So somewhere in that ballpark.

There is the option that Odell passes waivers and in that case the Saints could go about offering Odell a team friendly deal and wouldn’t have to pay him his $7.25 million. I don’t believe the Saints put in a waiver claim for Odell due to his cap hit, but if he passes waivers then they could do some restructuring and possibly come to an agreement.

This is a situation we’ll have to wait and see what happens. It’s not impossible, but don’t be disappointed if he doesn’t end up in a Saints jersey. The Saints landed Janoris Jenkins this way so it is definitely a possibility, but don’t get your hopes up.
