Could the Saints keep Janoris Jenkins?

There is one things Saints fans know all about, it’s about bad cornerback and safety play on a bad defense.

Prior to the Jack Rabbit suiting up for the Saints, the defense had nothing much to offer at the cornerback 2 position. With Marshon Lattimore on one side that left Ken Crawley, P.J. Williams, and Eli Apple as the cornerback number 2 over the span of two and a half years.

To play good defense, you simply can’t have just 1 good corner. Only having one is like trying to run with one broken leg. One leg does what it’s supposed to do while the other doesn’t function correctly. It just doesn’t work out that way.

Janoris has been the best cornerback 2 we’ve had in who knows how long, but he isn’t getting any younger. If the 32 year old corner was cut, that would save $7 million in cap space. However, unless the Saints want to spend time in free agency and draft picks on rookie to play the cornerback 2, they have to extend the Jack Rabbit.

Extending Jenkins would split his cap hit of $14.2 million into another year or two helping save cap space while keeping him on the roster.  Hence it would possibly be $7.1 million a year or $4.8 million a year. If the Saints do decide to extend Jenkins, they can restructure his contract to fit whatever space is needed at the time.

As to what I believe will happen between him getting cut or extended, I would hope he gets extended. Realistically I see him getting cut, but that doesn’t mean he can’t come back on a cheaper new contract. Only time will tell and we will know within the next two weeks.
