After losing secondary coach Aaron Glenn to the Lions the Saints went out and got a big name coach in Kris Richard. He coached in Seattle from 2010-2017 going from a assistant cornerback coach (2010), to the cornerback coach (2011), to the defensive backs coach (2012-2014), to finally the defensive coordinator (2015-2017). Then he was in Dallas from 2018-2019 as the defensive backs coach and defensive play caller.
Richard has 12 years of coaching experience, but is known most for helping assemble the Seahawks “Legion of Boom”. He helped draft Richard Sherman late in the 5th round of draft and turned Byron Maxwell into a well known and strong cornerback 2. He also helped draft and find Kam Chancellor who was drafted in the 5th round as well.
So what does this means for for the Saints secondary? Kris Richard could possibly turn Marshon Lattimore into a more consistent cornerback and turn the number 2 corner into a more lethal and consistent but aggressive playing style.
For reference when the Saints played the Cowboys in 2018, he was their defensive backs coach and we saw what happened during the game.
He will definitely bring a new energy the the defense and secondary, let’s just hope he can coach up these defensive backs the way he’s been known to do.
