Saints catch Covid, not a break, breaking down Thursday’s news

The Saints can’t catch a break, but what they have caught is a Covid outbreak. The team held virtual meetings on Thursday and their walkthrough practice was canceled by Dennis Allen so the team could deal with the current situation.

Once again the team will be missing a significant amount of players and will need to make some roster moves to fill the void of those missing pieces of the team. They worked some guys out earlier in the week and will be something to monitor moving forward.

Saints Covid situation

After a huge win over the Bucs, the Saints are having a Covid outbreak at the worst possible time. They’re in the final stretch to make a playoff push and need to win at least two of the last three games to find a way in. They will be short handed at tight end and quarterback, and now the Saints offense will be in the hands of rookie quarterback Ian Book. A total of 11 players have been placed on the Covid list this week.

Those players included Adam Trautman, Juwan Johnson, Trevor Siemian, Taysom Hill, James Carpenter, Malcolm Jenkins, Jalyn Holmes, Jeff Heath, Kaden Elliss, Jordan Mills, and Christian Ringo.

Ian Book named starter

For the first time in the regular season we’ll see rookie quarterback Ian Book take the reins and start at quarterback. With Jameis Winston injured, and Taysom Hill along with Trevor Siemian both on the Covid list that leaves one quarterback remaining: Ian Book. He’s only been active for two games this season, the Falcons and Titans as he’s a consistent gameday inactive, but not on Monday night against the Dolphins, he’ll have his NFL debut on prime time. The last time a rookie quarterback started a game for the Saints was in 1997, and it was Danny Wuerffel.

In the case that anything happens to Ian Book, running back Alvin Kamara is the emergency quarterback and would take over. The Saints currently don’t have another quarterback available other than Ian Book.

Who fills in for Malcolm Jenkins

With Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins being placed on the Covid list, the Saints will have to find someone to  fill in for him, and the short and simple answer is P.J Williams, who has had a phenomenal year and should have no problems stepping up for Jenkins.

Injury report

The Saints practice today was canceled as temporary head coach Dennis Allen told the players to stay home while the team dealt with the current Covid situation, so the Saints injury report is an estimation for what their walkthrough would’ve looked like.
