Mark Ingram returns, jersey changes, and other Saints news

Big news day for the Saints as a familiar face returns back to New Orleans with the possibility of more coming back. Some other news was reported that may not be as exciting but still news.

Covid List

Just as he was about to return after being on injured reserve, cornerback Ken Crawley was placed on the Covid/reserve list along with wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. They weren’t in close contact and both tested positive for Covid and will miss some time.

Mark Ingram returns

It was reported that the Saints had traded for running back Mark Ingram. After recent struggles at the second running back position due to a Tony Jones injury this move makes a lot of sense. Not sure yet what the Saints traded but it’s believed to be a future late round draft pick. I’ll go into more detail and depth about the trade itself in another article soon to be published.

Possible Jersey Changes

With the Mark Ingram trade there’s the question of what number will he wear? Ingram started his career in New Orleans wearing number 28 but then switched to 22. Chauncey is currently wearing number 22 and tweeted out during the offseason that if Ingram ever came back and wanted 22, then he would have to pay $2 million for it.

This was shortly after the Mark Ingram trade news

The available numbers for Ingram include 14, 17-19, 25, 30-37,42, 44, 46, and 47. Devine Ozigbo is wearing number 28 and I’m sure would be willing to give it up for Mark Ingram.

As for Chauncey, he seems to very obviously be hinting that he wants to wear number 8. The problem with that is that Archie Manning wore number 8. I’m not sure whether or not the jersey is retired, but if it is Chauncey needs the “okay” from the front office and Manning to wear it.

Here’s a photo of his Twitter profile as well with Kobe Bryant’s “8”.

Willie Snead News

Former Saints wide receiver Willie Snead was cut yesterday by the Raiders. The Saints should’ve been on the phone with him or at least in contact with him. After the news about the Mark Ingram trade Willie Snead likes some tweets that could possibly hint at a return and tweeted this out:

Since then however the Panthers signed him to their practice squad. Unless the Panthers put a practice squad protection on Snead (which would allow no other team to sign him off their practice squad) the Saints can still sign Snead but only to the active roster.

Brandin Cooks Reacts

A short amount of time after the news about Mark Ingram being traded was reported, Texans wide receiver and former Saints wide receiver tweeted the following:

This could be Cooks showing his frustration about the trade and losing one of his closest teammates; it could also be taken as he wanted to be traded to New Orleans with Ingram, however the Texans made it clear yesterday that Brandin Cooks along with a few other guys were not available for trade.

Cooks spent three years with the Saints from 2014-2016 before being traded to New England.

Injury Report

The Saints didn’t practice today due to their game being on Monday and arriving in New Orleans Tuesday. The injury report put out today was a simulated report as if they practiced. They’ll practice tomorrow, Friday, and do some extra stuff Saturday. As for Michael Thomas, we’ll know tomorrow if he practices based off the observations of reporters like Nick Underhill, Amie Just, John Hendrix etc. but here’s what was simulated today.

Did Not Practice: Dwayne Washington (neck), Deonte Harris (hamstring), Taysom Hill (concussion), Andrus Peat (pec), Payton Turner (calf)

As for the Bucs here is what their practice report looked like:
