Chris Hogan retires, 4 players ruled out, and other roster updates

As Monday Night approaches the Saints so does the team’s luck and eventful circumstances. The Saints have been dealing with injuries all season and have had struggles at receiver, and while those two things are getting better, those same areas of the team are still struggling.

The first of Saturday’s news for the Saints consisted of the Saints ruling out four players for the game on Monday; quarterback Taysom Hill will be out with a concussion which he suffered in the Washington game two weeks ago, Deonte Harris is out with a hamstring injury form the Washington game, Dwayne Washington is out with a neck injury from the Washington game, and Payton Turner is out with a calf injury which flared up this week.

Some positive injury news however for the Saints consist of the return of Erik McCoy and Terron Armstead, they have no injury designation so unless something significant happens between now and Monday expect them to play.

As for whether Davenport, Lutz, Tre’Quan, Kwon, Vannett, or Hansen return, it’s looking good. Everyone aside from Wil Lutz who seems to need a little bit more time, could potentially be activated to the active roster to play after practicing all week. If they were to be activated, it would be tomorrow (Sunday), if doing so the Saints will need to make room for the amount of players they activate. So a releasing, waiving, or the movement of a player to the practice squad.

The big news from Saturday was the retirement of Saints wide receiver Chris Hogan. Hogan, who signed with the Saints after spending some time as a professional lacrosse player but came back to play for the Saints, informed the team earlier this week about his decision. This was Hogan’s 10 season in the league and played 5 games for the Saints while totaling 41 yards on 4 receptions with a touchdown.

The decision to retire for Hogan has been on his mind the whole season, but after the bye week and spending time at home with his pregnant wife, he finally made his decision.

With Hogan retired he enters the retired/reserve list and opens up a roster spot for someone coming off of injured reserve.

With the Saints short handed ar receiver, here’s what the overall corps is looking like.

Active roster: Marquez Callaway, Kenny Stills, Deonte Harris (OUT), Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Ty Montgomery

IR/PUP

– Michael Thomas

– Tre’Quan Smith (could be designated to roster Sunday)

Practice Squad: Kevin White, Easop Winston, Kawaan Baker

With the Saints short handed at receiver someone off the practice squad will probably be elevated for Monday’s game vs the Seahawks. Of the three guys, I would think Kevin White gets elevated due to him having in game experience in real time NFL speed.

If Tre’Quan Smith is good enough to play Monday then he could end up filling in for Hogan which puts the Saints at 5 receivers in game day. So depending on how comfortable Sean Payton is with 5 receivers in the offense we’ll see if someone on the practice squad gets elevated.
