Players on the fence of making the roster or being cut

The Saints final preseason game was canceled due to Hurricane Ida, a category four storm which will pick up winds up to 130 MPH. The team will evacuate to Dallas until Wednesday unless the storm has other plans for the Saints to extend their stay. In the case they have to stay in Dallas, they will resume practices at Cowboys AT&T Stadium.

Stay safe out there everyone.

With the final preseason game being canceled the opportunity for guys who were undrafted or were on the fence of making the roster is gone. They won’t have another chance to make an impression on the staff with their play, everything will be evaluated based on training camp and the first two preseason games. August 31st (Tuesday) is the due date for the Saints to trim their roster down to 53 players, and they currently have 77 players on their roster. Things like the practice squad and injured reserve will play a role in getting that number down to 53. Here’s a list of my players who are on the fence of making the team or being cut.

  • Kevin White/WR: this one will likely depend on the situation at receiver, if anyone will be injured or suspended then White could be a possible guy they call. White didn’t look too good vs the Jags, but has been good at practice.
  • Chris Hogan/WR: same situation as Kevin White, but Hogan would most likely be called up first and be the next man up ahead of White.
  • Ethan Wolf/TE: with injuries being a problem at tight end, Wolf could possibly be called up to fill in for Trautman or Vannett if their placed on IR.
  • Garrett Griffin/TE: same situation as Wolf, Griffin could be called up in the case someone is placed on IR.
  • Jordan Mills/T: just depends how the Saints view Mills as a backup and an overall contributor to the team.
  • Eric Burrell/S: Burrell is a guy I like, and could contribute to special teams but there is some bad things about his game. If someone in the secondary was to get injured or suspended they would definitely bring Burrell up from the practice squad.
  • Latavius Murray/RB: Murray did not have a good preseason and Sean usually likes to only have 3 RB’s on his roster. That would be Kamara, Tony Jones, and Dwayne Washington for special teams. As for Murray it’s a completely on the fence call for Sean, and I’m not sure what he’ll do.
  • Chase Hansen/LB: Hansen is someone who has stood out, but the Saints have so much depth at linebacker that Hansen is likely someone they’ll put on the practice squad, but could still make the roster in place of Wynton McManis or someone else.
  • Kaden Elliss/LB: same thing as Hansen, it just depends on how Sean views each backer, but Elliss definitely could be a practice squad guy.
  • Albert Huggins/DT: Huggins is in the fence due to the thin depth at interior defensive line. If he has confidence in Huggins then he’ll make the roster for likely a few weeks if not, then the practice squad
  • Josiah Bronson/DT: same situation as Huggins and it will just depend on how much Sean thinks Bronson can contribute to the team.
  • Christian Montano/OL: just depends how the Saints view Montano as a backup and an overall contributor to the team, but I would say practice squad.
  • Kawaan Baker/WR: Baker has been a stud in special teams during camp, but hasn’t been good enough to make the roster just based off that, definitely a practice squad guy.
