Saints preseason game 1 overview

Notes/Observations:

  • Tony Jones had a solid day and definitely made a strong impression in the run and pass game, but needs better ball security for sure
  • Zack Baun looks electric, he’s playing fast and was all over the friend making plays
  • Defensive line needs to improve on watching the ball, way too many offsides flags
  • Marcus Davenport is playing with aggression, looked really good
  • Lil’Jordan Humphrey’s hands look strong and Improved from previous offseasons/training camps
  • Turnovers need to be fixed now, the running backs can’t be fumbling 3x, that’s ridiculous; the interceptions are iffy. Miscommunication on Taysoms and Winstons was a hard one to judge because of the safety
  • The offense was really good, but the mistakes completely ruined those drives and plays
  • Michael Thomas was catching passes from Winston on the sideline and looked happy to be around the team
  • Ian Book looked comfortable and made some decent passes
  • Marquez Callaway has become a really important part of the team and offense, he was in street clothes with the vets like Kamara by the second half
  • Kaden Elliss looked solid and made a few stellar plays
  • Bryce Thompson looked good in coverage and made a good high point interception
  • Paulson Adebo looked really good in coverage, had good break steps and good reads
  • Adebo made a really good play on punt team as well, looked really fast (good punt as well by Gillikin for 59 yards)
  • Eric Burrell gives out big hits

Quarterbacks:

The overall play from all three quarterbacks were similar, some good with some bad and not very much consistency. The interceptions from Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston are both iffy and you could make the case that it isn’t their fault.

  • Taysom Hill
    • Had a great start to the game
    • The interception he threw the receiver stopped running so there was miscommunication there
    • Did a good job of getting the ball out fast for a good portion of the time
    • Hill has got to make up his mind faster rather than second guessing himself, this almost cause him to throw a second interception
    • When he’s being pressured he has to run or throw it away, he was trying to extend plays that had no chance of being extended
    • Stats: 8/12, 81 yards, int
  • Jameis Winston
    • Definitely needs to work on trusting his first read, there were times where he saw the checkdown looked downfield and then threw the checkdown which resulted in only a few yards if that
    • Has to get rid of the ball faster
    • Had a really good 2 minute drive which resulted in a touchdown
    • The interception is hard to judge, if it’s thrown further ahead of him the safety makes a play so it’s hard to judge, if he throws it sooner and leads him then it’s probably caught
    • Stats: 7/12, 96 yards, touchdown and an interception
