Saints to sign two veteran corners

The Saints add more depth to their secondary today with the signings of Prince Amukamara and KeiVarae Russell. After their visit and workouts Sunday it was reported that the Saints would sign the veteran corners pending on their physicals.

It’s been a long process of finding another corner who can play consistent football on the outside at an above average level, and Amukamara could be that guy. He’s a solid corner and can play at a good enough level to get the job done as a number two corner.

Amukamara, 32, is entering his tenth season in the NFL after starting for eight of them and was on the Cardinals practice squad in 2020. He was originally drafted by the Giants with the 19th pick and played in New York from 2011-2015. Then spent one season with the Jaguars. Then spent three seasons on the Bears, and spent 2020 on the Cardinals practice squad. In his career he has 477 tackles, 10 interceptions, and 78 pass deflections. Amukamara has a shot to make an impact in the secondary and should be able to secure the cornerback two position on the roster.

KeiVarae Russell, 27, is a good depth addition. After the loss of Justin Hardee, Craig Robertson, and D.J. Swearinger, the special teams room is thin. Russell has primary played special teams in his career and would provide flexible depth at the corner and safety position.

Russell entered the league in 2016 after being selected with the 74th pick of the draft by the Chiefs. He was then released and signed with the Bengals and played in Cincinnati until 2018. He spent the 2019 season on the Chargers practice squad and part of 2020 season on the Giants practice squad but was later picked up by the Packers.
