Why Michael Thomas received surgery so late

The Saints continue to receive bad news after bad news, with a little bit more still to come. After suffering an ankle injury week one of the 2020 season, star wide receiver Michael Thomas received surgery at some point in June rather than when the season ended like we all expected he did. There is reasoning to Michael Thomas’ thought process to make this decision.

There are fans who believe that Thomas no longer wants to ball out for the Saints and that without Brees he will no longer want to play in New Orleans. Well they couldn’t be more wrong. The thought process of Michael Thomas was for the good of the team and possibly his health, it was a decision that just backfired.

After the season ended, rather than getting surgery on his ankle Thomas wanted to try rehabbing rather than getting surgery. In the scenario that rehab works, Thomas would be back on the field and at 100% health faster than surgery. At some point Thomas realized that rehab wasn’t helping his situation which led to the late surgery in June.

The surgery was on Thomas’ ligaments in his ankle, and surgery’s like that take up to around four months. The surgery took place during some time in June, so that leaves October to be the aiming time frame for Michael Thomas. If the surgery was early in June, the MNF game in Seattle could be a time frame to watch, it helps as well that it’s after a bye week. Once more details are released, we will know more information about recovery time frames.

With Thomas out for the first few games of the season, who does that leave to step up or possibly sign with the Saints? Tre’Quan Smith is the best answer for who will step up and fill the role of Thomas. It’s his final season of his rookie contract, and he has a big role to play (more on that here). Callaway as well is a name to watch and expect to have some solid games. Receivers like Golden Tate and Kenny Stills would be a solid pickup for the Saints, as well as a possible trade for N’Keal Harry could be something to watch. As more time goes on, more information and details will be released giving us fans a better idea of what is going on.
