What the recent signings mean for the Saints offense

Recently the Saints signed TE Nick Vannett and FB Alex Armah to contracts and that was their “early splash” they made in free agency. These aren’t flashy pick ups by any means but they may lead to something we all want to see.

These signings are pointing to a run heavy, play action heavy offense. An offense that runs through the one and only Alvin Kamara. Now that Drew Brees is gone, and Jameis is the presumed starting quarterback next season, we are going to need to make our system as quarterbcak friendly as possible.

The offense is going to run through our big athletic offensive line and now with the additions of Nick Vannett and Alex Armah, our heavy outside zone rushing attack is looking scary for next season. Kamara and Latavius Murray will carry the bulk of the load next year and will try to establish a fearsome rushing attack so that the offense can run through the ground.

This may be new to Saints fans seeing that our offensive has been an air raid system since 2006 but maybe this will help us in the short term. Jameis Winston has a cannon and is a proven quarterback in a passing heavy offense.

If the Saints can implement their outside zone running scheme early and often, then the play action pass will get opposing defenses to bite a little harder and will give Jameis better looks in the deep passing game. It will be different than what we’re used to, but I think it will give us the best chance of winning next season.
