Alex Armah Overview

Newly signed Fullback Alex Armah is one of the most athletic players at his position, especially with his versatile speed.

Clocking in at 6’2, 256 pounds the 26 year old fullback enters his 5th season after signing with the Saints on Monday. Armah was drafted in the 6th round with the 196th overall pick of the 2017 draft.

What makes this fullback particularly special is his speed. During his pro day he ran a 4.68, 40 yard dash (for other pro day numbers click here). Armah was the lead blocker for Christian McCaffrey, so with the patience of Alvin Kamara, Armah will create big holes for the runningback (and we all know what Kamara can do with a little but of open space).

Armah’s contract details include: a one year deal, $1.127M, $357,500K guaranteed, $137,500K signing bonus, salary is $990,000 ($220K guaranteed).

The use of the fullback has been decreased significantly in the Sean Payton system since the 2016 season, but with a new quarterback that could change. Jed Collins had 7 touchdowns from 2011-2013 and when John Kuhn took over the fullback position in New Orleans was consistently productive. We could see this return to New Orleans, especially with Alex Armah’s speed and versatile athleticism.

Why this signing is so good for the Saints is because we lost Josh Hill, the unsung blocking hero. We liked using tight ends in the blocking game, now that Josh Hill is gone Armah will be involved more. With his size and speed as well it could even be more efficient.
