How the Saints view Winston from his new deal

It was announced that Jameis Winston resigned with the Saints on a one year deal worth up to $12 million. This is the first offseason in 15 years that the Saints would be without Drew Brees, so Winston makes the most sense.

The 27 year old quarterback has spent the past year learning Sean Payton’s system and learning from Drew Brees. So it makes sense that Winston would be the successor, but what does the deal say about how New Orleans views Winston?

The details to the contract aren’t up to date yet, but it’s assumed that it is similar to Cam Newton’s. The base salary for Winston is a $1 million base, $4.5 signing bonus, $7 million in incentives (team achievements, statistic markers, playtime), with 2022 and 2023 as void years.

So, as to how the Saints view Winston, here is his contract compared to other quarterbacks. Right now Big Ben is getting $14 million a year, while Taysom Hill is earning $10 million a year (obviously Taysom is being paid to be a gadget player). Behind Hill would be Joe Burrow whose earning $9 million.

They likely view Winston as a quarterback who can take them to the playoffs, open up the playbook, and get back to a similar offensive system close to 2011.
