Saints Training Camp Day 4 Recap

Day four of Saints training camp is in the books. It was the first practice open to the fans and it was the perfect first open practice. Lots of big plays and exciting highlights from both sides of the ball.

Attendance

Pete Werner and Juwan Johnson continue to work off to the side with the trainer. Marcus Davenport was jogging around and doing his own work as well.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu still hasn’t appeared at a training camp practice due to personal matters, which he’s excused for. Dennis Allen said there is no timeline on his return.

Rashid Shaheed did work on his rehab for his ACL. Expect the Saints to activate him off the NFI list within the next four to five days and practicing with the team for the first time. A guy who was not seen was Bryce Thompson.

Taysom Hill once again didn’t practice due to a rib injury he suffered Wednesday. I’ve been told that the injury is two cracked ribs and for an injury like that, recovery will take a few weeks. Dennis Allen said he’ll be out for a little bit to confirm his absence.

Tanoh Kpassagnon returned after missing the first three days of training camp to an illness. Sage Doxtater returned as well.

Michael Thomas had a planned day off. The Saints are slowly revamping him into playing football again. He’ll practice Monday. He did the walk through portion of practice.

Just like every other day, Jameis Winston was the first guy on the practice field.

Post practice Jameis Winston was running drills with Jarvis Landry. The last guy to leave the field was Jameis.

Who Stood Out

The first practice where fans got to see rookie Chris Olave in action, he balled out. Olave had a 60 yard touchdown connection with Jameis Winston. On a separate occasion Olave beat Paulson Adebo on a comeback route. From everything that we’ve seen, Olave looks like a natural smooth route runner in the NFL.

In the third year of his career, Adam Trautman has had a really good start to camp. There were some contested catches and leaping catches Trautman made today.

Undrafted rookie free agent Abram Smith is having a really good camp. He’s making a lot of good reads and cuts showcasing his vision.

Starters

At left tackle James Hurst continues to take first team reps.

Opposite of Cameron Jordan, Carl Granderson has been starting in place of Marcus Davenport.

With Pete Werner working to the side, Kaden Elliss and Eric Wilson have been in at linebacker.

In place of Tyrann Mathieu, P.J. Williams has been taking first team reps at safety.

Landon Young took starting reps at right tackle for the second straight day.

Dwaye Washington took some reps with the first team offense as well as Kevin White.

Highlights

The play of the day was a Jameis Winston connection deep to Chris Olave for a 60 yard touchdown.

Vintage Alvin Kamara showed up today. He sprinted out of a small gap and found the end-zone for a 60 yard touchdown.

On the first play of the 7 on 7 drills, Chauncey Gardner Johnson picked off Jameis Winston. The pass was intended for Deonte Harty on a curl route. He read the route the whole time and would’ve been a pick-six.

Bradley Roby on the second play had a pick on Jameis Winston whose pass was intended for Chris Olave on a curl route.

Andy Dalton connected with running back Dwayne Washington on a nice wheel route.

Alontae Taylor has two pass break ups on two Andy Dalton throws.

Zach Baun tipped one of Andy Dalton’s throws, but Kevin White still came up with the catch.

Wil Lutz was perfect on the day. Making kicks 50+ yards out.

In team drills, Mark Ingram and Tony Jones had some really good runs.

Demario Davis, Onyemata, Tuttle, Eric Wilson, D’Marco Jackson, and Jordan Jackson had some really nice run stuffs.
