After these past two weeks we’ve seen Trevor Siemain do well enough to win games when the team doesn’t shoot themselves in the foot. He’s done exactly what he needs to do offensively by not turning the ball over and has been putting the receivers in good position to make plays, but it hasn’t always worked out for the skill positions.
Down this next five game stretch of the season the Saints will play three playoff teams and one possible wildcard team in the Eagles. It doesn’t take a genius to presume that the Saints will find themselves in some close games coming down to the final quarter just as these past two week have.
The next upcoming schedule includes the Eagles who are in the wildcard hunt, Bills who are one of the AFC’s best teams, then the Cowboys who have been dominate this season, then the Jets, and the final game of the stretch is the Buccaneers who could be competing for a NFC South title depending on how things go.
So what does this have to do with Trevor Siemian?
Siemian had done a good job of protecting the ball and not turning it over. When these games down this next stretch approach the turnovers will be critical as to who wins the game, and unless a penalty holds the Saints defense back, I would think they create some turnovers and opportunities for the offense. To go along with that Siemian and the Saints team in general have the most fourth quarter points in the NFL.
We’ve seen these past two weeks that Siemian and the offense will keep the game interesting despite the score. Siemian was able to manage almost two fourth quarter comebacks down double digits, and when you’re a potential wildcard team playing high playoff competitors in the next upcoming weeks, that’s a good quality to have in your quarterback.
Apart from the fourth quarter scoring drives, Siemian and the offense have time consuming drives. They take time off the clock, rest the defense, and if they become more productive they can at least get a field goal.
All this though is assuming that the Saints offense can manage to put up points on offense early in the game and get some momentum. Siemian can be a game manager when the team around him provides assistance and less mistakes.
When the Saints are going to get into these high competitive games all these things add up. The no turnovers, time consuming drives, and the ability to put up a lot of fourth quarter points can be the defining element that decides if it’s a win or a loss.
Firstly though the Saints have to cut back on the mistakes and allow Siemian to capitalize off the opposing teams mistakes otherwise the rest of season is gonna be very long.
