Saints vs Giants Recap

The Saints fell to 2-2 after losing to the Giants in overtime. This was a game the Saints should’ve won and one that will be looked back at once playoffs come around. Good teams don’t blow 11 point leads with 7 minutes left. We don’t know what the Saints are, we don’t know if they are a good team having bad games or a bad team having good games, but overall, this was a game the Saints deserved to lose.

The Giants just out coached the Saints, and the defense was gassed. They were on the field too much today and the offense has to be able to finish and start better. Here’s just some quick notes on the game.

The good

  • Sean let Winston air it out more
  • Alvin Kamara was able to run the rock and get over 100 rushing yards
  • Taysom Hill is starting to look like the energizer from when Drew Brees was qb
  • Deonte Harris was able to get himself more involved on offense, 5 receptions for 52 yards. Ty Montgomery also had a quietly nice day, hopefully he gets more involved
  • Less penalties by the whole team
  • The run defense was decent, not good, not bad
  • Jameis played one of his best games of the season if not the best
  • Offensive line gave Winston time, 0 sacks allowed

The bad

  • Sean Payton’s decision making (it did get better as the game went on)
    • Going for it on 4th and 3 from the Giants 25, then not challenging the spot of the ball
    • Next drive kicking a 58 yard field goal with a backup kicker on 4th and 3
    • Putting Taysom Hill in for a deep ball to Harris instead of Winston who through a td the play before (penalty called it back)
    • Challenging a 2nd down run that resulted in a 1st down for NYG, even if Sean won the challenge it would’ve been 3rd and inches. Ended up wasting a timeout
    • Sean is playing too conservative and doesn’t seem like he trusts Jameis which is a huge problem
  • They gotta finish, the play, the game, just finish.
  • Not enough pressure from the defensive line
  • The offensive momentum hurt to watch, nothing got going till the second half. The Saints need to start the game off better and faster
    • Three possessions in the Giants territory and got 0 points
  • The overall play of Paulson Adebo and the fact that DA didn’t adjust to help him out
  • The defense was gassed, they were on the field way too much and too long/often
  • The tackling was sloppy, they let the Giants have too much yards after the catch
