Saints Expected to Sign Desmond Trufant

After working out with the Saints Monday, the team is expected to sign cornerback Desmond Trufant per Ian Rapoport. The Saints must have felt comfortable and impressed with Trufant’s workout as it was good enough to get a deal done. The signing is likely just to provide veteran depth as the Saints only have three official corners on the roster.

Trufant spent the first seven years of his career playing in Atlanta and spent last year with the Lions only appearing in six games though. He spent some time as well with the Bears this offseason but was cut about a week ago. He was cut due to his absence during camp to be with his family and his father as he was passing away and Trufant was in no rush to return back to the Bears facility.

In the eight seasons Trufant has been in the league he’s totaled 14 interceptions, 83 pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles, 7 fumble recoveries, 6 sacks and 349 tackles, 10 of which were tackles for loss.

The veteran corner will turn 31 on September 10th, but age didn’t seem to matter much for the Saints in terms of signing Trufant. Sean Payton said the signing isn’t a done deal yet but is expected to be done relatively soon.
