The Saints are starting to do their homework on the currently available free agents after three days of training camp they are seeing what positions need more depth, possible veteran leadership, and just an overall improvement. The Saints lost three of their team captains last season (Drew Brees, Thomas Morestead, and Craig Robertson) so the team is likely missing a veteran leadership role on the team. All the players who visited with the Saints are veterans and have a few years of experience of playing in the league. Here are the players who visited today and the one who signed a one year deal.
The Saints had veteran running back Devonta Freeman visit and quickly signed with the team shortly after. Freeman is entering his eighth year in the NFL after spending six of them with the Falcons and part of a season with the Giants only playing five games. The last full 16 game season Freeman played was back in 2016 and he totaled 1079 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns.
The Saints also hosted visits with veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara who plays outside corner. Amukamara, 32, is entering his ninth season in the NFL and spent most of 2020 on the Cardinals practice squad.
The Saints also brought in two offensive lineman for a visit. Brent Qvale, a versatile offensive lineman, who spent six seasons with the Jets and one season with the Texans, and veteran guard JR Sweezy who is a former Seahawk, Buc, and Cardinal who is an eight year veteran.
Former Bills and Jaguars veteran running back T.J. Yeldon had a visit with the Saints as well. He’s entering his seventh season in the league and spent 2020 on the Bills with limited play.
