The undrafted rookie free agent process began yesterday with a stellar signing in Trill Williams for the New Orleans Saints. After drafting one cornerback (Paulson Adebo, player evaluation here), Williams will bring a versatile play style and swag to the defense.
Williams stands at 6’2, 198 pounds and will get physical with his hands. This is the kind of breed that Saints secondary coach Kris Richard loves to teach young athletes. He’s aggressive and makes a play on the ball which is why he’s lethal, but that could also be a problem, especially if you’re playing Tom Brady 2x a season along with Matt Ryan’s and other veteran corners. But this is something you can coach to improve and craft someone’s game. Not only is he aggressive in coverage but with his tackling as well, he attempts to strip the ball and create a play, which again is why he’s lethal but could cause lots of missed tackles.
Williams is an athletic player who can be put anywhere in the secondary from safety to corner to slot. A pro comparison would be his teammate Chauncey Gardner Johnson in his attitude and approach of the game, and Tyrann Mathieu would be a skill level of what Williams could become. He could possibly become our left side corner or the next safety alongside Marcus Williams after Malcolm Jenkins is gone. This is definitely one of my favorite signings and moves by the Saints this offseason.
Stats: 92 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, 5 pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 touchdowns.
